Adoption in the District of Columbia

Adoptions in the District of Columbia handled by the Superior Court. The practice of the Court is to have all adoption cases handled by one judge. The judge assigned to hear adoption cases normally serves for a period of one to two years until another judge is given the assignment. The parties should expect to appear before the judge for at least one court hearing before the signing of the final decree granting the adoption.
