Adoption in Maryland

Adoptions in Maryland are handled by the Circuit Courts. There is a separate Circuit Court for each county within Maryland. Each of those county courts has several judges. In some counties, all of the judges hear adoption cases. In other counties, there is a single judge who hears the adoption cases. Ordinarily, there are no hearings until the time when the adoption is ready for finalization. The rules require that the court hold a hearing for the signing of of the final order granting the adoption. The adoptive parent or parents and the child are required to attend the hearing.
